In water supply, HVAC and industrial piping systems, pressure reducing valves and pressure relief valves can be sensitive to impurities in the pipeline. Welding slag, rust, sand and other solid particles may enter the valve and cause sticking, sealing damage or unstable operation. Installing a Y strainer upstream of the pressure reducing valve or pressure relief valve is therefore an effective way to protect the valve.

A Y strainer mainly consists of a valve body, strainer screen and drain port. As the medium flows through the strainer, the screen captures solid particles and prevents them from entering downstream valves and equipment.

For a pressure reducing valve, a Y strainer helps reduce the risk of blockage in the valve or pilot system and supports stable pressure regulation. For a pressure relief valve, it helps keep impurities away from the seat and sealing area, supporting reliable opening, closing and sealing performance.

For this reason, installing a Y strainer upstream of pressure reducing and pressure relief valves can improve system reliability, reduce maintenance requirements and help extend valve service life.
